CDS Age Limit 2026: IMA, INA, AFA & OTA DOB, Cutoff & Eligibility

CDS Age Limit 2026 at a Glance

The CDS II 2026 notification specifies the following age bands and DOB boundaries. These dates are more useful than simply asking whether you are 23, 24 or 25 years old, because UPSC eligibility is checked against the prescribed date and the academy-specific DOB range.

These figures come from the official CDS II 2026 examination notice. UPSC states the academy-specific age and DOB conditions in the eligibility section of the notification.

What Is the CDS Age Cutoff Date?

A common mistake is to calculate your age on the date of the written examination and assume that this decides eligibility. That is not how the CDS II 2026 notice is structured. UPSC gives academy-specific DOB ranges and, where applicable, an age reference date such as 1 July 2027 for the Air Force Academy.

For IMA and INA, the notification allows candidates born from 1 July 2003 through 1 July 2008, inclusive. For OTA, the permitted range begins earlier, on 1 July 2002, and ends on 1 July 2008. AFA has a narrower standard range ending on 1 July 2007 because the normal age band is 20 to 24 years.

This is why an exact DOB check is safer than a rough age calculation. Two candidates can both say they are 24, while one may fall inside the prescribed DOB window and the other may fall outside it depending on the relevant boundary.

CDS IMA Age Limit 2026

For the Indian Military Academy, CDS II 2026 requires candidates to be in the 19 to 24 years age band. The notification specifies that eligible candidates must be unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 1 July 2003 and not later than 1 July 2008.

For example, a candidate born on 1 July 2008 is included in the stated range. A candidate born on 30 June 2008 is also inside the range. But a candidate born on 2 July 2008 falls outside the lower-age boundary for IMA in this notification.

Because the notification uses exact DOB boundaries, do not rely on statements such as “I will turn 19 soon.” Your actual date of birth must be compared with the official range.

CDS INA Age Limit 2026

The Indian Naval Academy follows the same basic age band for CDS II 2026 as IMA: 19 to 24 years. The official notification says unmarried male candidates born between 1 July 2003 and 1 July 2008, both dates inclusive, are eligible on the age criterion.

That does not mean age is the only INA requirement. Educational qualification, nationality, physical and medical standards, and other conditions also matter. Age eligibility only answers one part of the larger eligibility question.

CDS AFA Age Limit 2026

The Air Force Academy has a different age rule. For CDS II 2026, the standard age is 20 to 24 years as on 1 July 2027. The corresponding DOB range is 1 July 2003 to 1 July 2007.

There is an important exception for candidates holding a valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India). The upper age limit can be relaxed up to 26 years, with the notification giving the relevant DOB range as 1 July 2001 to 1 July 2007.

The CPL provision should not be interpreted as a general two-year age relaxation for every AFA applicant. It is specifically tied to the valid/current DGCA-issued Commercial Pilot Licence condition described in the UPSC notification.

CDS OTA Age Limit 2026

The Officers’ Training Academy has a wider upper-age window than IMA and INA. For the CDS II 2026 OTA SSC course for men, the age band is 19 to 25 years, with eligible unmarried male candidates born from 1 July 2002 to 1 July 2008.

For the OTA Women Non-Technical course, the notification states an age band of 19 to 25 years and a DOB range of 1 July 2002 to 1 July 2008. It also specifies the eligible categories as unmarried women, issueless widows who have not remarried, and issueless divorcees with divorce documents who have not remarried.

Why DOB Is More Important Than Your Rounded Age

Suppose two candidates both describe themselves as “24 years old.” That statement is not precise enough for recruitment eligibility. One person might have been born on 1 July 2002, while another might have been born on 2 July 2002. If the relevant notification uses a 1 July boundary, that one-day difference can change eligibility.

CDS Age Eligibility Examples

Example 1: IMA candidate born on 1 July 2008

The IMA DOB range for CDS II 2026 ends on 1 July 2008. Therefore, a candidate whose official DOB is 1 July 2008 falls on the stated boundary and is within the age range, subject to all other conditions.

Example 2: IMA candidate born on 2 July 2008

A candidate born on 2 July 2008 is younger than the permitted boundary because the notification says “not later than 1st July 2008.” That candidate should not treat a general statement like “I am 18 and turning 19 soon” as sufficient proof of eligibility.

Example 3: OTA candidate born on 1 July 2002

The OTA range begins on 1 July 2002, so a candidate born on that date is on the stated lower boundary and can satisfy the age-date condition, subject to the other eligibility rules.

Example 4: AFA candidate with a valid DGCA CPL

AFA normally uses a 20-to-24 age band, but the CDS II 2026 notification provides an upper-age relaxation up to 26 for candidates holding a valid and current DGCA (India) Commercial Pilot Licence. The DOB range for that provision is 1 July 2001 to 1 July 2007.

Does CDS Age Relaxation Work Like Government Job Relaxation?

It is important not to automatically apply the usual SC/ST/OBC government-job age-relaxation model to CDS. CDS is a defence recruitment examination with academy-specific age, sex and marital-status rules. The notification does not present a general category-based upper-age relaxation table like many civilian recruitment examinations.

The notable age-specific exception in the CDS II 2026 age section is the Air Force Academy provision for candidates holding a valid and current DGCA-issued Commercial Pilot Licence.

Therefore, candidates should not assume that a reservation category automatically adds several years to the CDS upper-age limit. Always read the exact CDS notification for the examination cycle you are applying for.

CDS Marital Status Rules and Age

Age and marital status are connected in the CDS eligibility section, but they are separate conditions. For IMA and INA, the 2026 notification specifies unmarried male candidates. For OTA men, it also specifies unmarried male candidates. For OTA women, the notice specifies unmarried women and certain categories of widows/divorcees who have not remarried.

AFA has an additional rule: candidates below 25 years of age must be unmarried and marriage is not permitted during training. The notification also states that married candidates aged 25 or above may apply, subject to the stated training-accommodation conditions.

This is a good example of why an age-only article should not tell readers simply “you are under 25, therefore you are eligible.” Academy-specific conditions matter.
